Where did “Barn Owl Candle Co” start off? It all started when my mother, Trish, loved making candles, wax melts, gift sets, and more! My mother was a very creative person and she loved making gifts around the holidays. She started off with Easter making weaved baskets and then it moved on to Christmas where she was making scented Christmas candles by hand.
While I was in middle school, my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer not once, but twice. That was the first time we as a family had to deal with this type of news, but we all stayed strong while she was going through chemo and radiation. She was able to beat breast cancer twice, she was a true warrior! My mother was able to go to my high school graduation and see me walk across the stage and receive my diploma. I was the second person in my family to graduate high school, so that was a huge deal in my family.
Then after high school, I attended my freshman year of college. I was half way through college and I received a phone call that my mother was not doing well. I had to drop college and my full time job to go live in Tampa, Florida at Moffitt Cancer Center to take care of my mom. I had to take her to and from appointments, chemo, and radiation treatments. My mom was so sick, it was time to go take care of her and do what I had to do!
To wrap up the story, I did what I had to do to take care of my mom, what every child would do. My mom went through thick and thin to take care of me. But unfortunately, my moms body was not reacting to the treatment anymore and her organs were shutting down and she passed away holding my hand.
And that is why I want to make a difference for cancer patients and survivors! With every candle purchase a percent gets donated to Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Florida. With every gift set box or cancer gift set, 50% donation goes to Moffitt Cancer Center. I wanted to make a difference in their lives! Last December, 2020, I donated over 26 cancer gift box sets for Christmas so the patients would have at least one Christmas present. I see so many people in the hospital around the holidays who do not get any gifts or family shows up, and that truly breaks my heart. Plus, COVID has made it extremely hard for family members to see their loved ones, especially cancer patients.
What do I want to accomplish in the future?
I want to be able to help more cancer patients and be able to donate a larger amount of money so I can make a bigger impact on their lives! The small business was created to help them and support them as much as possible!
